A bit of personal information: Born and raised in the Seattle area, it is my pleasure to be serving local families and raising my own family locally. I have three children, the first by cesarean section, and the next two by VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). We make our home with their fantastic father/my fantastic husband of 14 years and our dog, Rookie. Our hobbies include every sport in the book, hiking and camping, and lazy summer days. My kid's pages are located here.Or to see slide shows of our activities, please visit www.photodex.com, click 'online sharing', scroll down and enter jlo5505 in the 'browse member shows' area. Enjoy!
After attending college followed by my marriage I devoted myself to raising our children, and as they got older I began to look for a career path. My sister-in-law invited me to support her (and my brother!) at the birth of my second nephew which led me down the birthing path...as I sought information on how to do a great job for her I discovered the world of the doula. A coach by nature and practice (I was a swim coach through college), I found that I was a natural and loved every moment of it. I spent several weeks volunteering at a local hospital and was able to gain clinical experience in birthing from many incredible Nurses, Midwives, Obstetricians, Medical Students and laboring mothers and their partners. I acted as student, study-partner, go-fer girl (go fer the juice, the blankets, the ice, the birth ball, etc..!), and doula, gaining experience and learning from some of the best in the field. Upon completion of this experience, I went into private practice as a doula, where I am able to work with a variety of families in a variety of settings. I worked as a Midwifery Assistant in the Seattle area as well as my doula work and am certified in the Midwifery Management of Neonatal Resuscitation. I am also a Certified Gottman Educator and worked previously as the coordinator for a local Parenting Center as well as managing and developing Listening Mothers (www.listeningmothers.org). I am in the third year of an academic based (as opposed to apprentice based) three year midwifery program and plan on becoming a Certified Professional Midwife. I have been published in the international midwifery journal Midwifery Today and am a Trust Birth Facilitator. I will be speaking at the upcoming Trust Birth Conference in Redondo Beach, CA.
I have attended over 300 births at a variety of homes in the greater Seattle area with several of our local midwifery groups, and at Seattle Natureopathy, Acupuncture, and Birth Center, Community Birth and Family Center, Puget Sound Birth Center, Group Health Capitol Hill, Highline Hospital, Swedish Medical Center Main Campus and Ballard, Evergreen Hospital, Overlake Hospital, University of Washington Medical Center, and Northwest Hospital. (If you want to know the best places for birthing, email me!)
I have completed certification course work for both labor doula and childbirth educator and continue my education by attending conferences, classes and workshops hosted by a variety of organizations as well as participating in research groups to keep myself up to date and aware of current issues facing birthing women.
I volunteer for local organizations that seek to educate and advocate prenatal education and parenting skills development and have authored a guide for new mothers distributed by a local parenting center (40,000 copies have been distributed in the greater Seattle area).
I look forward to hearing from you and am always happy to help expecting mothers in their quest to have the type of birth they are looking for, even if you are not a client! Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have!
