SeattleBirthNet:  Cord Clamping and Banking
Childbirth Education and Labor Support for Expectant Families
Placental transfer of oxygenated blood, nutrients and stem cells continues for
several minutes after birth. Physiologic principles suggest that the optimal
transition to life outside the womb depends on this transfer.

Did you know....
  • In a study looking at the differences between babies whose cords were clamped and cut immediately after birth, at
one minute, and at three minutes, anemia at 6 hours of age was significantly more common in newborns who were
randomized to the immediate cord clamping group.
  • Immediate cord clamping is a practice that has been performed routinely for decades without evidence of benefit.
  • babies' bodies regulate their level of placental transfusion after birth and early clamping denies the baby access to
1/3 of the total blood volume that a newborn needs
  • It is critical to know that clamping and banking are issues that go hand in hand today--you will receive as many as
several dozen bids for your baby's cord blood over the course of your pregnancy from people in the business of
making money from it who do not consider the effect of early clamping on your newborn.
