Here's the low down about working with doulas from Jodilyn: **In Washington State doulas are not required to have any certification, so check references. **Certifying organizations vary along the lines of appealing to women with different birthing philosophies but often a woman will certify with the organization she has access to **A woman with no certification can be a great doula--don't pass her up! **Interview her over the phone for a couple of minutes and then invite her to your home for an interview **Whoever will be at the birth should at least meet the doula, if not sit down and talk with her (ideally!) **Make sure she won't force her birthing ideals or politics onto your birth or confront your provider or the nurses or midwife assisstants at any time--your birthing ideals should become hers and a great doula will tell you that during the interview process **In the end, certified or not, the singular thing that matters most is that you have a doula you feel GREAT with--you like her and she genuinely seems to like you and be interested in your birthing process. She doesn't make you feel like you know less and she knows so much more--she makes you feel that you can do it and her role will be to support you and guide you as you accomplish this most amazing moment! **Enjoy your doula! You will bond with her in a way you can't predict right now and she with you. Send her pictures as your child grows, she'll love it!!
