We live in a gem of a city for birth centers.  

Having received rave reviews for all of them in abundance--here's the synopsis of the many reviews:

It's great to deliver at a birth center because:

  • it feels like home only there's no worry about clean-up
  • mom and dad get to set the boundaries and make most of the rules for who is with them and when, when and
    how and where they want to be, and when and how and where they are touched or checked
  • there are no big machines making lots of noise
  • there are not dozens of people scurrying around in the hallway
  • no one ever forgets to protect your privacy
  • no one leaves the door open to your room like in the hospital where they treat you like a common patient
    without the need for some space of your own
  • the tubs are HUGE in most of the birth centers in our area and if they are not huge enough, you can bring in a
    GIGANTIC rented tub with a heater on it--yumm! (that's a direct quote)
  • no one makes you move when you decide you want to stay in the water to have your baby
  • the midwives contort into the most bizarre positions so that you can push that baby out wherever you feel the
    most comfortable and in whatever position you like
  • most of them have slings that hang from the ceiling which many mothers love to hang on
  • the beds are so big and comfy but no one expects you to be in it if you don't want to be
  • dads have plenty of places to be and a great stereo system to figure out
  • there is so much positive energy--moms feel connected to the women who have been there before them on
    the same journey they are on now and that gives them strength!  
  • the midwives believe that mamas know best and set up a whole environment to prove it!  
  • if you decide you don't want to go to the birth center the birth center comes to you at your home in the form of
    two midwives and some very large bags full of wonderful little baby blankets and whatever else you might need
