If you want to feel confused I suggest trying to wade through the myriad of research available regarding gestational diabetes. For every question I asked, two more popped up as a result of what I came across. Gestational diabetes is screened for with something that is called a test, tested for with methods that do not give relevant results, diagnosed based on conflicting research and ideas that actually don't make any sense, and treated with a prescription for "eating better and exercising more" without any clear definition of what that little catch phrase means! Yes, it's just that much fun.
To facilitate the reader's experience I have not cited each source by the sentence, but rather listed them all at the end of the document. The goal of this work is not to be a scientific reference point, but to hopefully shine some light on and provide even a bit of understanding when it comes to gestational diabetes based on what good research and researchers have to say about the whole kit and caboodle (that's a technical term).
If you want a magic answer, the good news is that there is one. That is simply, if you are pregnant, just act like you don't want gestational diabetes. The best health for your body and baby can be achieved by following the guidelines for women who do have gestational diabetes. They are listed out in this paper in some detail, and two books are recommended for you to do your own homework. I suggest putting your own mind on it and then bringing that information to your midwife for additional guidance. Take the time to build a great meal and exercise plan that will give you and your baby the best shot at optimal health. You two are worth it!!
